The DNC has lagged far behind the Democrats’ House and Senate campaign committees, as the latter two have accelerated their fundraising and outpaced Republicans, thanks in large part to the party’s new majority status.
But having Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) wrap up the nomination in early June appears to have freed things up for the DNC, which raised twice as much in June as it did in the two previous months combined.
The committee raised only about $4.8 million in both May and April. It had just $4 million in cash on hand as of May 31.
Obama also announced Thursday that he had raised $52 million in June, making the month a strong one overall for the party’s presidential hopes.
The candidate and committee combined have about $92 million cash on hand, which is slightly less than Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) and the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) $95 million.
The RNC said it had about $68 million in the bank at the end of June, while McCain had $27 million.
